Editorial Reviews Amazon.com One of the most recognized names in techno, Paul Oakenfold's new double-cd reflects his passion for trance music, an obsession of his since an influential stay in Goa and India in the mid-1990s. However, despite his reputation as a globetrotting Buddha-DJ, the dreamy, inventive mastery of Another World shows off the more straightforward chops Oakenfold has gained via his grounded, two-year stay at Cream (documented to superb effect on Resident), one of the U.K.'s oldest and most popular clubs. It also displays bits and pieces of the crossover-minded work found on records such as BT's Movement in Still Life and Chicane's Behind the Sun. Everywhere, rising beats and descending melodies wrap around languid breaks from the likes of Dead Can Dance, Rabbit in the Moon, and Vangelis, pulling off the ideal, oscillating structure of trance with deceptive ease. His crescendos, which make glorious use of up-and-coming Vancouver-based DJ Max Graham's gargantuan walls of rhythm, are especially instructive, demonstrating how remarkably proficient Oakenfold has become at incorporating big, crowd-pleasing payoffs in the mix. Off-the-wall sample choices such as a remix of Led Zeppelin's "Baby I'm Gonna Leave You" also unabashedly play to the crowd. Records such as Communicate from fellow trance masters Sasha and John Digweed may stay truer to the genre's introspective elements, but Oakenfold's emerging connection to trance's lighter edge makes for a compelling listen. --Matthew Cooke |
