Wynonna Judd Biography

Wynonna Judd (born May 30, 1964, Ashland, KY), launched a solo career after The Judds disbanded in 1992.

On her own, Wynonna has been more eclectic -- drawing not only from country, but rock, pop, and folk -- than she was as part of the duo that made her famous. Born in 1964, Wynonna was the first child of Michael and Diana Ciminella. When she was four years old, the family moved to Los Angeles. Shortly after the move, her parents divorced and she went to live with her mother.

The pair changed their names to Naomi and Wynonna shortly after the divorce. The duo began performing together after they moved back to Kentucky in the early '80s. They went to Nashville, where they landed a recording contract in 1984. The Judds became the most popular duo in country music history during the '80s. In 1991, Naomi was forced to retire after she was diagnosed with a chronic liver disease. Instead of retiring with her mother, Wynonna launched a solo career in 1992 with her eponymous solo album.

Wynonna featured three consecutive number one singles -- "She Is His Only Need," "I Saw the Light," "No One Else On Earth" -- and went triple platinum. The following year, she delivered her second album, Tell Me Why, which went platinum and spawned four Top Ten songs -- "Tell Me Why," "A Bad Goodbye" (a duet with Clint Black), "Girls with Guitars," and "Rock Bottom." In early 1996, she released her third album, Revelations. It went platinum within four months of its release.
